I loved the clam festival. Even during the years I hadn’t lived in Harrogate, I had always come to town for it. Everyone got in on the action. There were fried clams, raw clams, baked clams, clam chowder, stuffed clams, and clam cakes. All the restaurants and many of the residents had stalls at which visitors could taste the clams and then vote on their favorites. Many of the stalls also served alcohol, so I had a nice buzz going.

I checked my watch. At some point, I needed to steal Zoe away from her jam. I wanted to hang out at the festival with her. Also, my little brothers had been asking about her. Hunter was still pissed that I had pawned the kids off on Zoe. But hey, she had been great with them! I smiled to myself, imagining cookouts at the Svensson estate with Zoe there.

“Weston!” Sharla called from across the closed-off street. “Great festival, isn’t it? It was so nice of your family to sponsor.”

“We sponsor everything,” I reminded her, pointing at a giant poster hanging off of the ThinkX building. It bore my company logo and Welcome To The Festival in big, bold letters.

“It’s so nice to find a man who cares about his community,” she said, stroking my arm. “I wanted to catch up and hang out with you now that I’m back in town. There’s a bonfire tonight at my place. Do you want to go?”

“Definitely!” I said, taking another swig of my drink. “I’ll see if Zoe wants to come too.”

“Zoe?” Sharla froze. “You can’t possibly bring her.”

“Why not?”

Sharla gave me an assessing look, as if she was calculating something. Or maybe it was the alcohol. “So you and Zoe, huh,” she said finally.

“Yeah, she’s cool!” I said confidently. “No hard feelings between us, right?”

“Oh, of course not. We’re all still friends,” Sharla purred. “I’m glad you and Zoe are getting along so well.”

“Yeah. It’s like I’ve known her my whole life,” I said.

“I bet you have,” she muttered, or maybe it was my imagination.

“Huh?”

“Bonfire is at dark. I have a ton of alcohol, so just bring yourselves!”
